Glen Echo is a town in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, sitting on the palisades banks of the
Potomac River close to Georgetown in Washington, D.C.
The town is famous for its Chautauqua cultural events and an old amusement park,
the Glen Echo Park, now a U.S. National Park.
Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, was originally attracted by the Chautauqua events and
bought land and built a home, first used as the Red Cross Headquarters and warehouse and
eventually it became her home and is where she died 15 years later.
Trains would bring city residents out to the cooler locations along the river for
relaxation. Originally a retreat, the amusement park was established in 1899 and grew in the ensuing
decade. A carousel, roller coaster, pool, ballroom were all part of the
attractions that brought folks to Glen Echo.
Today, the park hosts resident artists and studios, theatre for
young children and Spanish Ballroom hosts public dancing events regularly.
Glen Echo is served by Montgomery County public schools; including Bannockburn
Elementary School, Thomas W. Pyle Middle School, and Walk Whiteman High School.
